AllMusic Loves 2007
December 3rd, 2009 | 4:40 pm est |

We covered 2007 in a similar way before — way back in 2007 — but not to this extent. Some of these lists from our editorial staff go up to 20 rather than 10, so there is more Radiohead, Panda Bear, White Stripes, UGK, and probably M.I.A. (There is the exact same amount of Amerie, Frank Zappa, and the National, however.) Consider this the expanded, remastered, reissued version of our two-year-old feature AllMusic Editors Pick Their Top Ten of 2007. The AllMusic Loves series will finish out the decade shortly.

Once again, Sean Westergaard has the best list. (((Powerhouse Sound))) and “Prezens” are awesome.
“I’m Impressed” by They Might Be Giants was a high-point for 2007. At least it should have been Too bad “The Else” got lukewarm reviews.
“The Good, the Bad & the Queen” deserves to be on this list too.
Kenny Werner had a very good album from this year.
Also worth mentioning are:
“PROG” by the Bad Plus
“El Momento Siguiente” by the Church
“Time on Earth” by Crowded House (why didn’t anyone mention this?)
“Art Pop” by Githead
“Monstrance” (Andy Partridge jams with friends; so, so good)

Animal Collective – Strawberry Jam
Jonny Greenwood – There Will Be Blood
The Ladybug Transistor – Can’t Wait Another Day.
Greetings.
I did like ‘2007 albums by white stripes, jens lekman, robert plant and wilco on the first listen. However, after a few spins they became monochromatic, saccharine, listless and mundane (to be applied in the same order as the artists above). Only apples in stereo, new magnetic wonder and radiohead, in rainbows stayed with me in the end. It brings into sharp relief the missing element of our generations music, longevity. Today’s toast, tomorrow toast.
This is a totally pointless column. Everyone knows what happened in 2007. Nothing. NEXT!
My faves:
Arctic Monkeys – Favourite Worst Nightmare
Radiohead – In Rainbows
Bloc Party – A Weekend in the City
Jay-Z – American Gangster
NIN – Year Zero
What happened to Stephen Thomas Erlewine’s list- it’s just been cut and paste off the previous 2007 feature.
Okay, the blog has, with this entry, featured 17 years, 8 of which have been the “2000-oughts”. By comparison, Allmusic has only “loved” one year of the 1960s, two years of the 1970s, two years of the 1990s, and four of the 1980s. How about, before completing the first decade of the 2000s, we get some “love” for years from some of those earlier decades? Maybe when Allmusic does its 2009 “best of” entry, there could just be a blending of the “best of” and “Allmusic loves” in the same entry–a killing two birds with one stone, so to speak. That way, only 2008 would be left, and it could be held back until some of the earlier years have been covered. (One year that might be very pertinent would be 1973, since Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” will be making a historic return to the Billboard 200 album chart.)
Well, judging by Joseph’s remarks above, at least I’m not the only one tired of these lists from the ’00’s. I’ve been down this road before, assured each time by AMG editors that there is a grand scheme here, to review each year from the ’00’s before the decade’s end. Yet what the scheme is proves irrelevant…there’s just no point to any of it. Anything so firmly embedded in recent memory cannot be given objective criticism, as we’re far too close to the material to consider its place in time and history. However, AMG trudges on, convinced that they are conveying some tangible meaning in the process. I’ve got news for you, AMG–you’re not.
still not a huge fan of Neon Bible. I know I should be, but goddamned it’s a preachy diatribe.
GUYS STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT THE LISTS. LISTS ARE FUN. THEY’LL GET AROUND TO YOUR SPECIAL YEAR. However, it does seem that some of the editors have grown rather disinterested…it would be lovely to have some more interactive features as well! I’ve always been curious about Stephen Thomas Erlewine’s opinion of the bird and the bee (since he was a fan of Inara George’s solo debut “All Rise”), but, alas, no word.
I logged on to complain that there was no mention of Protest the Hero or Shooter Jennings’ “Electric Rodeo” (underrated!!!) for the 2006 hoo-hah…but was too late :(
Saw the mention of Dethklok’s “Go into the water.” I purchased the record under the influence of a few Millers, and regret it to this day. However, “Go into the water” is the one very good track on the CD.
“Fiction” by Dark Tranquillity was quite enjoyable…but was surprised JCM didn’t mention Therion’s “Gothic Kabbalah.” The production turned me off at first, but it’s great stuff for any prog fan :)
This Sean Westergaard person is cool. Rainbow and Se Dice Bistonte no Bufalo on the same list is deserving of an internet or two at the least.
On previous blogs, the writers have spent at least a couple of minutes discussing where they were, what they were and how they were during a specific year, i.e. “I grew up in small-town American and listening to (name of Band here) was my connection to the bigger world”, etc. Now all we get is a generic list of music that could be pulled from Billboard’s Top 200. Please, a bit more personal insight into the music.
Jeff Gay pretty well hits this one on the head.
I’m a little shocked that more of the staff didn’t enjoy Ne-Yo’s “Because of You”
My top 10 for ‘07: Amy Winehouse, Wilco, “Into the Wild” OST, “I’m Not There” OST, Terence Blanchard, Bat for Lashes, Radiohead, Noisettes, Mavis Staples and Backyard Tire Fire, with Sharon Jones and Manu Chao just behind. Oops … almost forgot Against Me.
Stephen included Lily Allen’s Alright, Still twice. This time, and on Allmusic Loves 2006. He should pick a year, and give the spot to an album that was left out.
I don’t mean to be so negative sounding in a previous comment. I am sure that there are a lot of great albums to love buried in between these lists of titles that I have personally found disappointing. I think that this year would be better served in a list that reviews the best albums of the decade, the ’00s. I would probably have just about as much interest in most of the records on this list as well, but maybe that’s just because I just lived it. I know that, going through it, this site and others were more likely to have a title page w/ indepth reviews of albums by Spears, Timberlake, Aguilera, et al. On the other hands, I suppose that’s the way it always has been. The only things that really last from an era are the real deal artifacts. Meanwhile the media pines away about the Partridge Family or Cher or whoever, just because they are on the TV a lot. I guess I feel that a list like this is just not that helpful. Would prefer if this site focused more on historical releases, like it used to. The staff should make a concerted effort to tidy up some of its very one-sided reviews and work on improving its content on non-English language artists. A quick browse through website rateyourmusic.com shows that each year’s top 100 overall lists often contain albums by artists from France, Brazil, Russia, Japan, Italy, etc. Now I know that many titles on these lists are disputable, and I adore AMG for occasionally championing an album that I have also found of merit. Then again, many of these great albums don’t even get more than a paragraph on this site, in fact, they are lucky to get a track listing sometimes. I am just saying… you guys can be working on cleaning up this site a little bit more, make it relevant again. These lists are kind of a waste of time, because I do remember 2007. I say get your fixation on this decade over with, and then make a New Year’s Resolution to be more objective. Surely you guys must recognize by now that these releases have nothing to do with the classic music that was recording in decades of yore!
To J Son: Way to COMPLETELY miss the point. It’s not a matter of AMG “getting around to” a “favorite year” as much as it is an absurd recapping almost an entire decade that’s not finished yet, while failing to cover any OTHER decade nearly as much. As I noted, the earliest year covered on this blog in 1968. 1968 to 2008, inclusive, is 41 years, yet ONLY 17 of those have been covered with EIGHT being this decade alone. All I want to know is WHY this blog feels the need to finish out THIS decade before even reaching a halfway point on ANY OF THE OTHER decades.
I have doubts that, should AMG start an “AllMusic Loves” blog devoted to artists, people would enjoy reading the blog after finding that, after only 17 entries, there are 8 hip-hop artists but only 1 country artist, 4 alt-rock acts, 2 hard rock/heavy metal artists, 1 traditional R&B artist and 1 mainstream pop artist in the mix. (Granted there are far more genres of acts that could be covered than years/decades to be covered, but the basic analogy remains.) No matter WHAT particular genre you specifically like or enjoy, it would get a bit annoying to stick with one style at the expense of others.
* Ian Hunter–Shrunken Heads: Underrated album of the decade? The ballads are truly moving, the rockers slightly off-center and edgy–all this at age 68. Wisdom, a sense of discovery and old fashioned anger abound in a record everyone ought to have in their library.
* Bettye LaVette–Scene of the Crime: A perfect pairing of an artist who has done it all and a backing band (Drive-By Truckers) with the soulful restraint to make it work.
* Bruce Springsteen–Magic: The cynical reaction to this album was perplexing. He’s using more melodic tools than in many a moon, and the performances and material (“Last To Die,” “Long Walk Home”) are often great.
* Mavis Staples–We’ll Never Turn Back: Among the most meaningful songs she’s done, which is saying a lot, and stellar production from Ry Cooder to maximize their sting and lift.
* Andrew Bird–Armchair Apocrypha
* Nick Lowe–At My Age
* Joni Mitchell–Shine
* Levon Helm–Dirt Farmer
* Blonde Redhead–23
* The White Stripes–Icky Thump
Hey, Joe! Yes. It is absurd that AllMusic is recapping a decade that’s not finished (especially at such a snail’s pace and without any individual commentaries). However, my point is this: back in the AllMusic Loves 2005 intro, after an avalanche of comments similar to yours (“why not some other decade,” etc.), they had this to say: “A reader asked in the comments section of AllMusic Loves 2004, our previous feature listing our editors’ favorite releases from a given year, ‘What next? AllMusic Loves 2005!?!?’ Yes, exactly. As we said when we looked back at 2000, we are covering each year of the decade until we reach the end.”
Straight from the horse’s mouth. Therefore, it is a bit annoying to still see such righteous comments after AllMusic has obviously turned a deaf ear. Nothing personal – and sorry if you didn’t see the original post. Consider it reposted, since it appears nothing has changed.
Btw, I don’t mind that AllMusic is doing this 2000s thing. The thing that really bugs me is that The Whole Note is updated every, what, two, three, maybe even four weeks and all we see is yet another parade of plain old lists? Where is the inspiration that characterizes so many AllMusic reviews? I would like to see AllMusic REALLY LOVE the 2000s – or maybe they’re not ready after all…
-or-
Maybe AllMusic really wants to capture the FEEL of the 2000s…perhaps they’re holding back the good stuff for a DELUXE version of “AllMusic Loves…”
Hey AMGers. I can’t remember if anybody actually reads this stuff, but if so, I think some of you would really enjoy TIM FINN’s “Imaginary Kingdom” from 2007. Ask Mr. Woodstra if you don’t believe me. That is the only glaring omission I see in this list and I love the FINNs, so I had to get that off my chest. Really, I just wanted to tell you that I live in L.A. with Neil Hamburger, Tim & Eric. Well, not actually with them in the same house, but I do see them around often. I haven’t joined the Facebook still, but I do check myyyyyySpace atleast once a year. Find me and I’ll tell you more about Tim Finn. HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Shalom.
I’m pretty sure Allmusic loves every decade of recorded music, but seeing as the Internet being on the rise in the 2000′S era they decided to make a fav. list of theirs for this decade since it is coming to an end. They will probably do a list for the next decade too, but I pretty sure in the years before 2019 they will be making list for all the rest everybody’s precious decades of the 60’s,70’s,80’s,90’s and maybe some even earlier so they can show off a bit. I would agree with the snail’s pace of these blogs though. Come on AMGers the internet has only been around since the earlier 90’s(invented in 89) and businesses didn’t realize the opportunities until later, plus the evolution of it, etc. Anyways, not trying to show how smart I am, but people who comment,”WHY THIS DECADE?” really need to connect the historical dots. I mean really, you come to this site to read their reviews anyway.

A couple of things: i find it weird that anyone complains about AMG content: you don’t have to read it people!!
The 00’s have been good.
That is all.
No wait…i think people who complain about things like AMG lists should be deprived of basic human rights (like >50% of the people on Earth are) and hopefully they will realise what spoilt little b*tches they are.
@HRS: Thanks for providing us with an alphabetized list of every album released in 2007.
@Marty: You’re delusional if you think that just because we’re blessed with a high standard of living that we don’t have the right to complain about things.
@AMG: I’ll reiterate what others have said on here. The problem has nothing to do with how old or recent a given year is. The problem lies in the impression we have that your writers are already sick to death of the format and are just mailing it in. Some of the first ones had some cool personalized dialogue accompanying the lists….now it’s just random list after random list. I’d rather have much shorter lists with a short explanation as to WHY something is so good/memorable/important to the writer.
Especially for the newer years, where the music is by and large less familiar to your readership, it’s important to have some reason to care about the choices on these lists.
Cheers, Jim!
What I want to know is when will AMG determine that enough time has passed for some of the albums from this decade to qualify as 5-star, best-of-genre.
Last week I watched Erik Friedlander perform pieces from his 2007 “Block Ice & Propane.” Not just a unique performance, but a very unique album. Fred Kaplan of Slate listed it as a top album for 2007, even though he was hesitant to describe it as “jazz.”

2007 was a good year for music. Top of the list is 23 by Blonde Redhead. Like Mario, I believe that it’s one of the best releases of the decade.
On the other hand, PJ Harvey’s White Chalk was utter drivel. She only made the list because she is a critical darling. Her other releases were great; White Chalk was pretentious and self-indulgent.
The fact the National’s still not included warms my heart.
I’m actually enjoying the run down of the 00’s, though I do agree with Jim. For readers like myself who have been following your ‘End of Year’ lists for the last few years, these lists can look like cut-and-paste jobs from previous posts.
Maybe the tedium and repetitvity of this project is really taking its toll?
My Random Top Five of 2007:
Radiohead – In Rainbows
Porcupine Tree – Fear of a Blank Planet
Caribou – Andorra
Dinosaur Jr. – Beyond
The White Stripes – Icky Thump
@AMG – As with Matt’s comment above, I’m REALLY looking forward to an update on your archive of albums that deserve re-reviewing, especially within releases of the last two decades. You did a really respectable job in November 2008.
It’s now been over a year since it happened so now’s the time to label the new classics and give us a bunch of full five star albums!!! A blog entry to herald this would be great, so we can see the changes.
