HDJz 30: Dedicated to the Scotland Yard Gospel Choir
September 25th, 2009 | 4:40 pm est |
No jokey intro this week — we’re just not in the mood. Instead we want to dedicate the HDJs to the Scotland Yard Gospel Choir as they recover from a horrible van accident that left members of the band in various degrees of injury. Please head over to their label’s website to see what you can do to help out. They’ve set up a recovery fund to help the band members get back on their feet. (http://www.bloodshotrecords.com/news/sygc-van-accident) Only after you’ve done that should you listen to this week’s selection of jamz.
Veronica Falls
Roxanne out of the Royal We was an awesomely Sexy Kid; now she’s in this group and making excellent lo-fi pop again. Check “Found Love in a Graveyard” for some spooky surf-y pop goodness.
Meth Teeth
Still have a hankering for lo-fi noise-pop? These guys deliver the shambling, distortion-laden goods.
At Swim Two Birds
This UK group isn’t new, but “The Night We Ran Away” from their new album Before You Left is still pretty crushworthy in its sleepy, sad way.
A Grave With No Name
Finally, an act whose ironic MySpace genre descriptions actually fit: “Grunge/Country/Ambient” expresses A Grave With No Name’s noisy, rustic, melodic sound collages pretty darn accurately.
Sun Araw
Magic Lantern’s Cameron Stallones celebrates this endless summer with some hypnotic beach-scuzz.
Ben Esser
Say what you will about his hairdo, Esser’s music isn’t half bad.
Warpaint
The Vivian Girls on morphine.
Cinema Red And Blue
Comet Gain side-project with all the heart & soul intact but a little bit of noise removed. They are currently recording their first album, we are currently excited by this news.
Teengirl Fantasy
Underwater disco soft-boiled and served with plenty of cheese.

so sorry to hear about the accident. we love you guys so much. we will hopefully see all of you at the Halloween benefit show.
take good care.
