BLACKsummers'nightMaxwell’s first album in eight years, BLACKsummers’night, will be a commercial success as well as a critical one. Billboard estimates the album may sell between 275,000 and 325,000 copies in its first week of release. However, Maxwell isn’t guaranteed the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart, since Michael Jackson’s Number Ones is still doing brisk business. [Billboard.com]

Speaking of the King of Pop, Nielsen Media Research says that 31 million people watched Jackson’s Tuesday memorial service on television — an impressive number, but not as large as the amount of viewers who watched Princess Diana’s funeral or Barack Obama’s inauguration. [Yahoo.com]

The Polaris Music Prize announced its short list of 10 Canadian albums eligible for the $20,000 award. Former winner Patrick Watson’s Wooden Arms is among the chosen few, along with Fucked Up’s The Chemistry of Common Life and Metric’s Fantasies. The winner will be announced on September 21. Bradford Cox continues to be one of the busiest men in indie rock. Besides Deerhunter’s prodigious release schedule, he’s got a new Atlas Sound album, Logos, in the can. An early version of Logos, which features collaborations with Panda Bear’s Noah Lennox, Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier, leaked last year; Kranky will release the complete, Cox-approved version on October 20.
