Now THAT is a list.
Glad to see Escovedo and the Truckers get their props, but those really ought to be on the ROCK list and not Americana. And I tought something had been done about Ryan Adams already …
Yay, Kathleen Edwards!
No Wood Brothers? This is the best Americana release of the year.
Your list sucks. How much do the labels pay you for this shit?
Tift Merritt’s is phenomenal - may well be my No. 1 for the year.
no chris knight “heart of stone” ??
come on now!!!!!
What about Blue Mountain’s “Midnight In Mississippi’ or “Omnibus” cds? They are one of my favorite alt-country rock bands.
Right, Paul. I’m sure that record labels have enough money left over from their phenomenal high-selling performances in 2008 (yeah, right) to pay a website for inclusion on this list. Tool.
What the hell is Americana? Is this some home-of-the-brave-musical-propaganda invented by John Cougar? No offence, but Kathleen Edwards is Canadian. She’s ours and you can’t have her.
Same goes for the very australian Kasey Chambers/Shane Nicholson.
A A Bondy should easily have made this list.
Decent list. I thought the new record by Blanche should be a part of this though….
Somehow I feel this list is insubstantial and incomplete.
I dunno, I feel Fleet Foxes should be there. Listening to their music I keep on getting ghostly images of American Indians…no I’m not on anything….
If that was 2008 we obviously have a bad year behind us…
It wasn’t all that bad though:
Jim Lauderdale & The Dream Players: Honey Songs
Carlene Carter: Stronger
Alela Diane: The Pirate’s Gospel
Michael Holland: Simple Truths And Pleasures
should have been on top of that list.
Let’s hope for a better 2009!
So glad to see Ryan Adams (& the Cardinals)/Whiskeytown on the list!
Todd Snider and Mike Farris deserved some recognition this year also, Chris Knight had a great one too! Thanks
Now guys, have you been sitting on your ears the last 17 years? Your category “Americana” for sure collects some great music, and it’s for sure also always a good thing to list Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. But it’s for sure not a good promotion, neither for you OR the Jukes, if you do that with another anthology (this time released in Australia!) of their classic stuff, ignoring Southside’s fabulous GRAPEFRUIT MOON! Well, if you would at least have listed that in the JAZZ category, you’d be forgiven…
I see that Matthew questioned Kathleen Edwards being on the Americana list because she’s Canadian. Last I checked, Canada and the United States are both part of (North) America (as is Mexico and a few other countries to the south).
No Moondoggies?!!?
It’s heartening to see the Old 97’s on the list. Deserved
