Crush Band - LAKE

It’s pretty shocking to me that K Records has been around for as long as they have. 1982? Is that possible? What’s even more astounding is that while the quality control may waver now and then, you can pretty much count on a K record being at least a worthwhile listen and sometimes something quite amazing. Look at the past year or two with Saturday Looks Good to Me, Jeremy Jay, the Blow, the newly signed and quite awesome Desolation Wilderness, and now LAKE.
These five kids from Olympia sound like a ramshackle, mellowed-out version of Architecture in Helsinki at first listen, but the more you dig into the record, their lazy soul and shy charm really reel you in. It helps that the girls sing like your first girlfriend and the dudes croon like Northwoods Romeos. Their first outing for the label is called Oh, the Places We’ll Go, and it’s very, very good. It’s satisfying to know that even after a lifetime in the biz, K hasn’t even begun to lose their touch.

Q: You know what phrase should be disallowed from rock writing - in addition to sound-scape?
A: blissed out
I have to disagree with you. K records has a horrible history of putting out records of friends of friends who have absolutely NO talent or business having a record deal. It seems like the few great acts they have been associated with (Mirah and the Crabs are amazing) they’ve stumbled upon by accident. You’re picking out a few mediocre bands to illustrate a point, but overall, K Records has taken a nosedive in quality the last couple of years.
Lakes are okay, but nothing to write home about. The record is pretty forgetable and the live show is bland.
DJC - I agree with you completely. I don’t know what I was thinking - I’ll go replace it with something better. I have another one for you…”ballsy”. I hope I never ever read that again anywhere.
