Video Jam of the Day: YMCK - “Starlight”

Whether it’s harsh or sweet, bitpop and chiptune — which use 8-bit based sound chips to make blippy, tinny music — almost always brings to mind the blocky shapes and bright colors of old-school video games. Tokyo’s YMCK embraces their sound’s pixelated past and its look, too: In their album artwork and especially their videos (which member Nakamura Tomoyuki makes), the band looks like long-lost cousins of Mario and Luigi. “Starlight,” a clip from YMCK’s latest album Family Genesis, may be the band’s most elaborate video yet (side-scrolling! powerups!), but it’s still got their unmistakeable mix of simplicity and sophsitication.
Those who love the 8-bit sound but don’t have the gear should check out the “Magical 8-bit Plug” that YMCK offers on their website — it’s a plug-in that lets your modern-day PC or Mac pretend it’s a vintage video game console.
