Way cool album from a great band. People started to get a bit tired of ELO shortly after this release, because they were on the radio as often as the Bee Gees! But since the Travelling Wilburys, and producing great albums by Tom Petty, George Harrsion, etc. Jeff Lynn started getting some much deserved respect back! This album is a great listen from beginning to end. A great band reaching for IT on a sprawling double LP. My vinyl copy DOES come with the cut-out 3D cardboard spaceship, and it’s intact! Most of those got made into happy little mobiles! Remember mobiles! 70’s Flashback! Cheers!
Hmmm… considering that this album was released in 1977, that is a pretty bold statement.
Other contenders for “most important group” included Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, the Ramones, Sex Pistols, the Clash, Debby Boone (just kidding),…
Look, Jeff Lynne never got the respect he deserved until the Wilburys, but “Out of the Blue” really isn’t a very good album. Even though I like ELO, with the exception of “Mr. Blue Sky,” this album doesn’t measure up. Great cover, though.
“Simon says, overproduce.”
Brilliant! The good old days! Long live ELO!
ELO’s spaceship always reminded me of the game Simon:

Uh………. I don’t recall seeing too many “Bob Dylan is a group” posters hanging in record stores in 1977
(somebody out there will hopefully take the hint for what should be the next retro ad based on that)
