Hmmm...you'd thought there would be other bands doing good next year besides metal and hard rock. But then again, I might be wrong...

I reviewed a lot of these CDs for the radio station I work at (www.wuag.net) or just happened to listen to them otherwise. But I totally agree with every band on this list. Would love to see more blog entires like this.

My band played a show with Monotonix in Pittsburgh last fall. There were 10 people there, but they still threw down! The drum set was in 3 different places over the course of the set, the riffs were HUGE in the empty hall, and I've never had so much sweaty Israeli chest hair rubbed on me in my life. Definitely check them pout live.

I would also suggest a band named Toca... their album in 2007 ("Toca") was something different... ive never seen styles being blended in so many ways. and they are talented musicians.

except one band, I never heard the 9 new bands before, but will look forward to see if they really as good as it should.

as for that one band...I'm amazed how AMG just put Supergrass here though they knew that this band been making records for at least 10 years ago.is that just a true love for them (the band)or something I don't know missing here? but they surely got that wacky aura in their music alright.

Wow dougy, what a great view of music...what's the point in listening to new bands, they'll only sound like older bands.

Hell, we've got it all wrong, we should hole up in a bunker and pretend it's the '70s again, and listent o the same albums over and over again.

Sheesh.

In fact let me join you in that time machine, we can go where the music was original and fresh, and we don't have to read rubbish posts on rubbish bands...

Damn internet allowing people to share their views on this so-called 'music'...I think bashing rocks together sounds better than all music ever! The cavemen had it right.

What's with all of this? AllMusic, thank you for putting up the list. None of them are really my style, but THANKS ANYWAYS!

Sheesh, why are some people complaining about the list? They did this as a FAVOR! (I'm guessing) nobody asked them to do this, so don't go yelling at them if it doesn't list every single new band you like. All it is, is a: "Hey, these new bands (or bands with a new album) are pretty good. Listen to this." So one SHOULD say, "Thanks, but I don't really like any of them" if you don't, but do go screaming about how the bands suck and how "this" band you like is sssooo much better than "that" band listed.

Note that I say some people. I'm only referring to people like Tom and Dougy, and any future posts like them.

I think some posters may have taken the dry sarcasm of certain posters (i.e. myself and Drew) a bit too seriously.

To clarify - I'm glad allmusic are posting lists like this...keep 'em coming!

I had the pleasure of seeing Monotonix perform at a small bar here in Humboldt County, California. The killed it! That lead singer is small, but man does he have some friggin' energy and stage presence. At one point he disappeared, but we could still hear him singing. That lead singer is small, but man does he have some friggin’ energy and stage presence. At one point he disappeared, but we could still hear him singing. A few minutes later he emerged from the women’s bathroom . . .

I'm surprised you didn't throw Earthless in there...

I think the most deserving unmentioned band here is the awesome German stoner-jazz trio Colour Haze. Ufomammut would also be a great pick.

I work for the first all-digital record label-Zoomoozik.com. This list should include Medieval Steel, the Epic Kings of Metal. You can go directly to:www.medievalsteel.net. They and many other metal artists on our site blow these away. Check out the site at: www.zoomoozik.com to find new music in all genres.

They put Supergrass up there, because despite the fact they've been around for while and half released several classic albums, nobody knows who they are. STILL.

Thanks for the list, AMG.

this is a great tool to use and understand music. as a ex-record store owner and current dj, i appreciate this info. rock is a mis-used term nowadays. rock and roll came from the same meaning as hucklebuck, i.e. rollin' in the hay. when this term came into popularity in the 50's this was considered dangerous and seeded that people could talk about sex so openly. mostly in caucasian circles for they were still singing songs about their moms. hip white country, blues and jazz folks knew where to find the fun, in black america. sex, drugs, and rock and roll replaced sex, drugs and wrestling in our culture. it is the sub-cultures that propels the future out of stagnation. prog-rock and metal are only dangerous, because of electricity. all music at this point is retro, but the key is in delivery.
whatever you likes or tastes, it came from somewhere. so appreciate the roots and the contempories for creating music that hopefully says something worthwhile.
boycott corprate radio!!!

Frankly, every selection listed marks an incredible talent, minus one. Beyond any looming shadows of doubt, my band should have been named among this year's list.

I publicize for an eclectic Jam band called "Mahalo and Goodnight," a modern blend of Pendulum meets Incubus. Their sound is unparalleled.

Check them out

Big Business is great, I saw them by accident live a couple years ago opening for Minus the Bear, and they were far and away the best band there. It's funny to me when people complain about this.

It's hard for me not to see complainers about this list complaining, while they tout the "baroque pop"? masterpieces of crap like jens lekman and other mediocre read (indie pop) bands. Not that I don't like alot of the newer good bands, but apparently its somehow become only good if its indie pop.

A majority of those new bands seem to hate any kind of distortion, and all sound the exact same on every crap college radio station.

I miss the days when I was under the impression that pavement, the pixies, built to spill, and dinosaur jr were the monsters of college rock; not the days of architecture in helsinki, and their ilk. rock and roll in its true independent form, indie because they had to be, not because they had bandanas and it was the hip thing.

and way to plug some crap jam band, that's what we need.more jam bands. as if Guster and DMB don't clog enough space as is.

Wow, nice to see this article. I complained loudly about a month or so ago when AMG posted their Favs of 2007 list and it consisted almost entirely of Indie Pop/Rock. My comment was followed by many others supporting the call for more "Rock" and not all this Indie and "Modern Rock/Metal" crap that seems to be all over the airwaves nowadays.

I will definitely be checking out the handful of these bands that I haven't heard of before but I highly recommend Earl Greyhound. They've been on constant rotation in my ipod for about six months now and I don't ever seem to get tired of this album. I also really enjoyed "The Sword" last year, looking forward to their next. Birds of Avalon was recommended to me a little while back but I'm still on the fence about them, need to give it a few more listens.

Many thanks to AMG for this article and hopefully we'll see a little more attention being played to the REAL rock scene that is still alive and healthy, just not on the radio. LOL!

A few that should prove to be rocking pretty hard:

Children of Bodom
Mastodon
Gojira
Trivium

Should be another great year for heavy music.

hmm, i'll have to check some of these out but fyi the sword = hipster metal = lame. seriously, they suck, and by suck i mean their interpretation of metal/rock is boring since it brings absolutely nothing new and/or exciting to the world. but i guess some kids like it....?
personally, i'd go with something a little more interesting, like:
Genghis Tron, if you don't mind the screaming.

These are the typical heavy bands that it is fashionable to like for record store kids with t-shirts that are too small. i am suprised you didn't mention "boris" ..... if you mention them then you sound really smart and cool.

remember there is nothing wrong with liking some flash.....your tight t-shirts, unassuming attitudes, and 1950's glasses are no different than a mullet, studded wrist bands and strip joints. it's fashion.

a lot of these listed bands are good, but i don't want to read about "sabbath fueled riffs" anymore. it is fashionable to play and fashionable to write about.

judas priest, slayer, children of bodom, overkill, iron maiden, testament, exodus and others have been doing it for years. nobody will pay attention the bands listed in a few years no matter how good they are. if you want a good indie band to make you feel good at your record store though...i like "bible of the devil". priestess is perty nice as well.

The Fucking Champs are fucking boring; the George Winston of do I dare call it metal. Supergrass is super overrated - a weeze and a snore. The Sword = Thor + Bong. All the new bands that get my swurve groovin' are a recycled form of the past too. Long live Fu Manchu!

several of these bands arent even heavy or metal..

judas priest, slayer, maiden, etc. paved the way for alot of things, but in the end, its really not that heavy.. fast, sure.. skillful, indeed.. but not too heavy.. way too much treble..

not that heavy.....too much treble? look the only point i am making is that this style of music is completely fashionable right now.

slayer, maiden, priest too much treble? you need to stop reading the textbooks and enjoy stuff. all these dorks on this message board are name checking each other and trying to come up with other bands that "we" don't know. you don't think i know the "heavy" element that people are getting at on this list? ME TUFF! ME KNOW BANDS YOU DON'T! ME KNOW HEAVY! yeah....it was done 10 times better 10 years ago by kyuss, melvins, fu manchu, nebula, and even trouble and pentagram dating way back (cliche comment warning "they were ahead of their time").

...the only reason i mention the other bands like slayer, exodus and priest is that they stuck with what they have been doing and haven't changed for a trend. this bottom heavy sound (stoner rock, doom metal whatever) is a trend that will be gone along with these bands. all i am saying is that slayer, maiden, overkill, priest will still be around.

errr....don't forget the importance of blue cheer...ME SMART! ME SAY GOOD THINGS AND MAKE GOOD FRIENDS BECAUSE ME LIKE GOOD MUSIC!

thank you for the education on my car's treble and bass knobs you tool. go dust off your vinyl.

by the way i love doom metal (just not the critics that are jumping on now).

ME KNOW HEAVY! yeah….it was done 10 times better 10 years ago by kyuss, melvins, fu manchu, nebula, and even trouble and pentagram dating way back (cliche comment warning “they were ahead of their time”).

…the only reason i mention the other bands like slayer, exodus and priest is that they stuck with what they have been doing and haven’t changed for a trend. this bottom heavy sound (stoner rock, doom metal whatever) is a trend that will be gone along with these bands. all i am saying is that slayer, maiden, overkill, priest will still be around.

errr….don’t forget the importance of blue cheer…ME SMART! ME SAY GOOD THINGS AND MAKE GOOD FRIENDS BECAUSE ME LIKE GOOD MUSIC!

thank you for the education on my car’s treble and bass knobs you tool. go dust off your vinyl.

by the way i love doom metal (just not the critics that are jumping on now).

I can't bear to think that this is the best 2008 will offer. What a trite, heartless collection of bands. A couple might be tolerable, but I'd never heard of any of these bands before and frankly I'm not surprised.

This list is everything that's wrong with the critiquing profession, "Look at all the bands I know that you don't! Aren't I quirky and unique?"

The best release 2008 will see is if Australia's Karnivool release their sophomore, which will undoubtedly blow minds.

Everyone here should listen to the album Yesterday Is No Tomorrow by the Brooklyn band Stalkers. I'd say it's the best pure rock 'n' roll album to come out in years (seriously!). Check out their myspace page below (the song "Feeling Fine" is a personal favorite of mine, but they're all pretty great):

All these commnets and not a mention of the Fleshtones. At least their brand new album got a four-star review here at AMG.

Oops, I see this list is about bands that rock in 2008. As the Fleshtones are SUPERrock, I guess they do not qualify.

You should check out "Flametal". Their music is a fusion of flamenco and metal, hence the name. It's perhaps the most original sound in contemporary rock/metal. The new album, "Master of the Aire" is due for release any time soon I believe

Go have a look at www.myspace.com/thevipersuk

New band in Manchester, UK, just about blowing everything out of the water and are (so I hear) about to put out their first proper album.

Go now and listen, and if you're lucky enough to live near them, go! They HAVE to be seen.

Is it just me, or are there only eight bands on this list of "10 bands that rock in '08?"

Generally good choices, but also a little odd for an '08 list... most of these bands were rocking way before '08. Fucking Champs and Supergrass have been at it since the mid 90s...Big Business had a pretty big album a few years back in "Head for the Shallows," and they've been gigging as half of the Melvins for a while now (something that this list doesn't acknowledge). Still, it's a nice list for the uninitiated.

I agree with some people here. I claim Black Mountain with their "In the future" to be the rock album of this 2008. Nevertheless, I think it's too early to decide what's the rock album of the year being in February; let's wait a little, so we can decide with this year in our backs.

In my opinion (which is all any of this crap is...one person's perspective on an infinitely complex smorgasboard of musical tastes...), all of the bands listed by AMG are high-quality, with the sole exception of THE SWORD, who are merely mediocre. That being said, at least they're doing they're thing...Which is more than I can say for the gaggle of hermaphroditic neanderthal dipshites who keep posting to this list with asinine statements regarding all manner of genre-wide stereotypes and the enduring relevance of Slayer and the poseur-ish nature of each and all of the bands listed by AMG or mentioned by others who've posted...Give us all a break and save it for your

This here blog ain't about being ahead of the musical curve or establishing yourself as arbiter of taste for the young musically-minded masses or upholding the legacy of whatever your conception of the musical Holy Grail is (Newsflash: prior to Kyuss, Melvins, and - believe it! - Pentagram there was some other shite available that Homme, Buzzo, and whoever the hell was in Pentagram copped their riffage from, at least partially...No one's an absolute original...). This here blog appears to be merely about posting some short, succinct, pithy statements regarding bands that are perceived to bring at least some heft to their musical noodlings...I like the dude who simply says: "Buckethead" and gets out of the way. And I like Genghis Tron. I'm enthusiastic about Ganghis Tron and their upcoming release, entitled BOARD UP THE HOUSE.

Self-acknowledged arbiters of taste on this board should pick that GT shite up in a few weeks on Hydra Head, then acquaint (or reacquaint, as the case may be...these arbiters have heard and digested it ALL...!) themselves with some Converge (JANE DOE is a tight choice) and then maybe some Pig Destroyer or some Stinking Lizaveta...Some critics do like these bands - and have said so in print...! - but, dude, I'm telling you, their still good...And TOTALLY original...! I'm serious...

Rebut if you like but it's getting boring.

Hey, great list, Tim! Top one! Some new bands fer our delight! But I agree with people here as well. Some bands like Stalkers don't deserve being out of the list. But, well, it's your list and it's nice anyroad. Don't forget including this my electronic project (psychedeic topical-electro-punk rock from brazilian jungle) in the next one, aye?! Heh.

Cheers from Brazil!

Supergrass does stand out from these other bands as belonging in a different article. The Champs are always great.

Maybe a less safe choice woulda been: traindodge, maps & atlases, damiera (re-formed), el ten eleven, tokyo police club, electrelane, etc...

Musical taste is subjective. Just because I don't like a certain band doesn't mean they're not good.

I would agree that Supergrass might not belong on this particular list, although they've been good for a very long time. "Life on Other Planets" was pretty excellent, and very T. Rex.

I think The Sword are getting backlash because one of their songs was featured on Guitar Hero II. If "the masses" dig them, then it's uncool to like them. I like "Age of Winters" - it's not awesome, though, and it's well early to tell if they're ultimately very good.

I'm happy to see a list like this, though. Even if I only end up liking one band of those that I don't already know (and there are several I haven't heard of), it's totally worth it.

Great blog, I am finding it tougher and tougher to discover hard rock bands these days and thanks to this article, I've definitely discovered some new artists I wouldn't have known about otherwise. Unfortunately for those of us in that sad isolated corner of the world known as New Zealand, we have to work pretty hard to discover stuff outside the mainstream. Although I was already a fan of The Sword and Supergrass (who admittedly have been around since the mid-90's).

Agree with you on the indie saturation as well, I guess we were spoilt for choice in the 90's with so many great hard rock acts (many of whom are now reforming, for better or for worse).

Are the Black Angels too well known now to make it onto this list? They're frontrunners as far as I'm concerned.

Ever since I can remember, I've had to listen to you tired, little children fret over the taste-mistakes of other music fans. Well, so what. There's a good chance that you actually may not be the smartest, most-astute connoisseurs on the planet. There's no accounting for taste; so grow up and stop fronting, my little darlings.

It never fails to astound me that so many people have the "I don't like it so it sucks." attitude.

You don't like it. We get it. Try to pry open your narrow little mind and realize that someone else might enjoy it DESPITE this "fact".

Looking forward to hearing Big Business. Anything Melvins related has to have redeeming qualities.

All well and good but you all realise that these groups or their labels would have just paid for this seemingly 'independent' promotion?
You all have NO idea..............nothing against any of these acts, but go back to thinking for yourselves eh? It's like punk never happened................... : (

Thank you for this list, AMG. Admittedly, I have never heard of these bands, but I will be checking them out.
I don't understand people these days. The point of this list is to get you to listen to new things and perhaps explore genres and styles of music you haven't yet gotten into.
Once again, AMG, I thank you for this. Well done.

Another band you should check out is The Dreaming. They're lead by Chris Hall from Stabbing Westward, and are a good rock band with some electronic tendencies.

Wow, here I am always referencing a source, until now, I thought was all too readily accessible for useful information, and then I see your chosen list of deadbeat potheaded loser bands, and I can't help to think who ever compiled this list really misses his D$D Nights.
Rockin' bands and you put the sword in there....try Nocturnal Rites for some power metal and NO LO-FI which is !&*@^#% OLD NOW, and then after that, and unrelated but rockin' nonetheless; Nevermore, Lamb of God, Arch Enemy (that's a chick singin' DOOD), In Flames, SOilwork, Demon Hunter, Strapping Young Lad, Exodus, Megadeth, Mnemic, Anthrax, Biohazard,Skindred, and the list could keep going but just one of those mentioned would blow every one of yours in that !@%#* a!&@^# list away. Maybe stop asking Chicks and Gay guys who their favs are, like, K guys?!?!
