Catch Up While the Allmusic Blog Rests
December 24th, 2007 | 8:00 am est |
We’ve just placed the Allmusic Blog in a warm room with a five-disc DVD player stocked with Fireplace, Ambient Fire, Virtual Flames, Fireplace Lounge, and Ambience DVD Fireplace to keep it company by playing on continual restful loop until the morning of January 2, 2008, when it will resume normal activity. (The Allmusic editor who suggested Boxer instead of the DVDs has just been sacked.) In the meantime, the blog would love to have its archives scoured — there is extensive CMJ coverage, album reviews, crush bands, buried treasures, recent favorites, playlists, and so much more — and it does not want you to forget about all the in-depth roundups and bizarrely controversial lists of favorites from the Allmusic editors:

where is the top rock albums??
Not to sure anyone really cares what the editors think.Their opinions count for next to nothing.
Merry Christmas!
The editors’ opinions are just as interesting as anyone else’s. And by accident I am very interested in other people’s opinions about music.
Hello! Where are the top Rock Albums of 2007?
Is the genre too small? what percentage of Allmusic daily visitors are mainly interested in rock? ill bet over 50%.
Lame.
Disrespectful.
Coming to this site to put for the purpose of putting them down for not having a specific list labelled “Top Rock Albums” seems rather disrespectful to me.
A great deal of of the “Allmusic’s Favorite Albums of 2007″ and “Allmusic Editors Pick Their Top Ten of 2007″ lists are new rock. And, of course, there’s comments on those entries complaining about the lack of this artist or that genre.
Can’t please everyone. Heck, judging by the comments on some entries here, you can’t please anyone.
i like boxer =(
Dear Stephen Thomas Erlewine,
I just read the Y! Music biography you wrote of Linda Rondstadt. I thought it was well written.
Interestingly, you did not mention at all, her relationship with Lowell George which led to her release of his song Willin’ and, if I’m not mistaken, the recording of another Feat tune, All That You Dream (Barrère, Payne). Given your apparent love for the music of Little Feat, I found that to be an unexpected ommission.
Keep writing those reviews

Reggae, electronic, latin, metal, hip-hip, …
But no rock??!
This is truly baffling.
I appreciate AMG for its comprehensive information, but your critique of music is a little off.
Seriously, best electronic? I’m sure the 14 electronic music fans appreciate the time it took to put together the list.
Phil, I feel sorry for you. There was some brilliant electronic music released this year. Your critique of electronic music and it’s relevance is a little off.
Bit of an american view, Phil. I live on a continent that’s just gone crazy about the Justice record (which I didn’t completly understood)
I made my comment regarding electronic music partially tongue-in-cheek. I doubt that anyone would disagree
that electronic music is a niche category. It’s unclear
to me how the category of rock is omitted, yet reggae,
electronic, latin, … is there.
AMG seems like they’re trying just a little too hard to be “edgy.”
I’m waiting for “Allmusic’s Favorite Blues Albums of 2007″.
Maybe they weren’t in the mood to make a favorites of rock list, it’s still a blog, so the blogger(s) write what you feel like writing.
And Phil, maybe what you’re saying might just have been the reason. Because there are (compared to the other genres) so many albums released in the rock scene that that is what made it hard to make a favorites? Maybe they’re not able to come to a compromise with the whole team? I don’t know. Though also I think it’s a pitty.
Nice job for all the other genres favorites lists though!
I kinda mostly agree with your top picks for the albums of 2007.
It’s just a pity that you missed out on something that revolutionized the way I looked at rock music: Qwentin’s debut album “Première!”.
I’m sure it was a really easy one to miss upon: unknown band, from a small label, coming from a small country. However, you guys should give it a go.
Rock on!
