Nicole Atkins weaves atypical melodies with her rich, smooth voice on Neptune City, an album that sounds like the soundtrack to a series of colorful, vivid dreams. Choosing highlights from the album is like trying to settle on gourmet chocolates from a variety pack, but here are some good, teasing tastes.
“Together We’re Both Alone” (sample). The spotlight is on the power of Atkins’ smooth voice, which sounds weary and resigned, yet quietly hopeful. A slow tempo and rolling counter-melody of lush strings gives the song its deep, otherworldly atmosphere.
“Love Surreal” (sample). If Chrissie Hynde set about interpreting a Siouxsie Sioux track, it would probably sound something like this, with smoldering vocals and steady beats juxtaposed against ethereal strings and piano.
“Brooklyn’s on Fire!” (sample). It’s rousing and gleeful, with a theatrical quality further emphasized by the choir that shouts out the chorus. That’s the only time you’ll hear it — Atkins deftly handles the rest.

I have to agree. This is one album I’ve been looking forward to for some time. The “Bleeding Diamonds” EP was a great teaser, but this is one terrific album. Not a weak track anywhere.
Mark is 100% right. If you would like to know more about Nicole, please see my cover story in the October issue of Upstage Magazine. I have also reviewed Neptune City in the November issue, available here. Enjoy!
