Crush Band: The Royal We

The Royal WeThe Royal We were born when singer Jihae Simmons moved to Glasgow in search of indie-pop kicks. Darned if she didn’t find them and she and five friends started the Royal We in early 2006. They became the hip band of the summer and were championed by Belle & Sebastian and the 1990s, among others. When a deal to release a single on a Rough Trade offshoot fell through, Stephen Pastel stepped in and the band was signed to the PastelsGeographic label. The first single, “All the Rage,” is one of those songs that jumps inside your head and won’t leave. The stuttering beats, spiky guitars and violin, and insistent hand claps provide the framework for Simmons’ gloriously bored vocals and the huge hook in the chorus. The video, on the other hand, threatens to jump out of your stomach. It’s cute in a kind of disgusting way — Tallulah Gosh meets Shaun of the Dead, maybe. Watch it with your eyes closed if cannibalism makes you queasy…
