CMJ Crush Band: Speck Mountain

Speck MountainLike a revived Mazzy Star (minus the hard drugs), the co-ed Speck Mountain fashion D.I.Y. dreamscapes out of space rock, dream pop, and hazy neo-psychedelia. The group originally formed in Brooklyn, where bassist Karl Briedrick and vocalist Marie-Claire Balabanian bonded over a mutual love of krautrock and Bret Easton Ellis novels before fashioning the lush, semi-sober sounds of their debut album, Summer Above. The spacey songs alternately drone, swirl, hum, and chime, with reverb coating Balabanian’s alto vocals and organ arpeggios bubbling beneath. The band currently resides in windswept Chicago, so expect their homecoming gig at the Knitting Factory (scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 18) to reach new — dare we say it? — heights.
